GP colonoscopy referrals can be cut by 40% by using FOBT as a test for ruling out symptomatic patients, pathologists have been told.

The faecal immunochemical tests (FIT) currently used for bowel cancer screening could also be used to exclude cancer in symptomatic patients because they have a 100% negative predictive value, according to research presented at the annual meeting of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in March 2015.
